Dragon Ball FighterZ Releases New Story Trailer and Three New Playable Characters

A new trailer has been released for Dragon Ball FighterZ. It is being developed by Bandai and Arc System Works and will be releasing January 26th, 2018. Arc System Works are the developers of the popular fighting game Guilty Gear. There is a large crossover between the fighting game community and Dragon Ball fans. You would be hard-pressed to find someone in the FGC that hasn’t at least heard of Dragon Ball Z, so the hype surrounding an official, competitive Dragon Ball Z is incredible. The fact that it is being developed by Arc System Works who already have proven their ability create a competitive fighting game makes this all the better. Today it was also revealed in a scan posted by Shonen games that Ultimate Gohan, Kid Buu, and Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks would be joining the roster in Dragon Ball FighterZ.

(Spoilers for MGSV ahead in this paragraph.) The new trailer reveals some key details of what players will experience in the story mode of this game. In the trailer, we see Bulma awakening a Goku who has no memory of himself or who Bulma is. Throughout the trailer, it is implied that Goku’s conscience is gone and the player is filling that void. This may lead to some fun 4th wall breaking antics. This mechanic was done flawlessly by Kojima in MGSV for an amazing reveal at the end of the game.

Another place where the developers could have taken inspiration from is the Yamcha Manga, where a High School Dragon Ball fan falls down the stairs and supposedly dies. He is then reincarnated in the Dragon Ball Universe as Yamcha. It is a crazy story and you should check it out. Needless to say, this trailer is exciting with the new characters being added to the mix.

Further viewing the trailer it seems players will not only be awakening as Goku, but as Frieza, Android 18, and possibly others.

These two panes make it very clear who one of the main antagonists will be and how the story will progress. There are three separate arcs in this game, and the player will awaken as the different characters in each of the different arcs. Android 21 explains, “With some of the people we linked, the body’s original owner ended up surfacing.”

Here is my quick speculation of how the story will go. The quote in the previous paragraph means we are going to be seeing some crazy Captain Ginyu type shenanigans in this story. Captain Ginyu may play a key role in the story by getting everyone back to their original bodies. After completing the game we will find out who the player actually was throughout the story. Currently, there are no character creation mechanics announced for the game, so it will be interesting to see how the ending of the story pans out. Are you excited about a new competitive Dragon Ball fighting game? Who will your team of three characters be? Let me know in the comments.
